Whitney – Dandelions

Small Talk - Dandelions

Whitney, the Chicago duo formed by Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, have released their fourth studio album Small Talk (AWAL, November 7, 2025), a record of exquisite taste that could well become their best work to date. The LP features 11 tracks, including the fifth cut, Dandelions.

Kakacek and Ehrlich, the former drummer of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, founded Whitney in 2015 after the breakup of their previous band, Smith Westerns. For Small Talk, Whitney did not work with a producer. Instead, the album took shape organically with the help of several friends. The result is a handcrafted work with a retro touch, where their acoustic sound evokes another era.

“We decided to make this record with no outside producer because we trusted that we could navigate the multiple years of highs and lows and breakthroughs and self-doubt and political chaos and music industry struggle that it takes to make a record nowadays. And we were lucky enough to do that with a community of our bandmates and best friends,” Whitney explained on Instagram.

Lyrics

Might take a year to catch my breath
Shake it off, find a new address
Fall back in love with central time
Try to tell this troubled mind
That there’s no bitterness at all
It’s no one else’s fault
I let it slip away
Wildflowers growing high
As the remnants of a life flew by
Like dandelions
Might take a beer to numb the pain
We took a risk, but you passed the blame
I ain’t at my best, don’t get me wrong
Halfway to noon, and I’m halfway gone
If I’ve known happiness at all
It didn’t last too long
‘Cause I drank it all away
A wildflower growing high
As the remnants of a life flew by
Like dandelions
