Dancing With Myself fue lanzado originalmente en octubre de 1980 por Gen X (anteriormente Generation X), una banda británica de punk rock, donde alcanzó el puesto 62 en la lista de singles del Reino Unido. Fue la canción principal de su último álbum de 1981, Kiss Me Deadly. Generation X se formó en 1976 por Billy Idol y Tony James en Londres y se disolvió en 1981, cuando Billy dejó la banda para convertirse en solista.
En 1981, Billy relanzó una versión remezclada de Dancing With Myself como su tercer sencillo en solitario, pero en el sello y en la portada decía Billy Idol and Gen X. En Estados Unidos, la canción alcanzó el puesto 27 en la lista Billboard Hot Dance Club Play. Más tarde, Billy lo relanzó nuevamente en 1983.
En una gira de la Generación X por Japón en 1979, Billy Idol y Tony James quedaron impactados al ver a la joven multitud en una discoteca de Tokio bailando con sus propios reflejos en los espejos en lugar de entre ellos, lo que utilizaron como inspiración para la canción.
El vídeo de Dancing With Myself fue dirigido por Tobe Hooper. Presenta a Billy en un escenario extraído de la película cinematográfica de 1971 The Omega Man, interpretando a una figura solitaria en un paisaje urbano post-apocalíptico asediado en la alto de un rascacielos por vagabundos mutantes fiesteros.
