Vancrynes – Overly Concerned
Australian indie rock singer-songwriter Vancrynes released a new track on April 25, 2024. Overly Concerned is part of an extended collection of self-produced singles that the artist records following a boundless creativity. In the last 12 months, Vancrynes has shared 35 songs and demos. His repertoire is close to a hundred.
“Stop, slow down, around the sun we turn. We’re moving way too fast…” says Vancrynes in Overly Concerned, a song echoing the sounds of 80s rock soak with a personal experimental stamp.
This song “comes from noticing when an attitude of positivity can dip into despair, against a backdrop of pretty challenging times for many people in the world,” Vancrynes told Jungle indie Rock. “Sometimes I question whether the negative thoughts in my mind are justified, or, are my efforts to have a generally positive attitude actually me being ignorant to the reality of the world today?” he added.
Overly Concerned lyrics and the melody are inspired by 3/4 time songs spinning in circles around his head as a pendulum, while the drums overlap as a simple 4/4 time with a strong back beat structured as a rectangular rhythm, which creates a feeling of disorientation.
“I feel like I’m going from one end of the pendulum to the other and constantly in motion between two oppositely charged poles…flipping between happiness and despair, with one feeling blending into the next,” he said.
The lyrics “You tell me that I’m overly concerned” however highlight “an attempt to stay positive in attitude,” he explained. “Some of it might just be due to anxiety and not a real reflection of my own life experience right now.”
“Sometimes, when I listen to this song, these lyrics make me feel like maybe this voice is actually trivialising what’s a pretty grave situation. So, again, I flip from one position to the other,” he said.
